‘THE WRITE STUFF’

In year 2 we are continuing our writing journey using the ‘The Write Stuff’ with Jane Considine.

They will be creating a  stories based around the text 'Wombat goes Walk About' by Michael Morpurgo.

Later in the half term they will be using leaflets to create a Travel report about going On Safari.

Handwriting 

Wow! The children have been working so hard on their handwriting. I'm sure you'll agree when you see writing samples during Parents Evening. 

Look out for the handwriting display in the main corridor.

WOW DAY!

The children had an amazing WOW day to start off their topic. They used books, the Internet, film clips and photo packs to explore animals on our planet. It was fantastic to see what the children already knew about animals and 

SCIENCE

What makes animals the same?

Throughout Science the children will be learning about a range of animals. They will be thinking how we can group them by there key features. Whether they are reptiles, birds, mammals, fish, amphibians or insects.

They will also learn how to group animals by what they eat. using the terminology omnivore, herbivore or carnivore.

Geography

What do I know about the UK?

The children will be learning to name the 4 countries of the UK. England, Northern Ireland, Wales, Scotland. They will also identify the seas which surround the UK. The North Sea, The Englsih Channel, The Irish Sea, North Atlantic ocean.

We will look at each country adn look at key features both man made and Natural. They will learn the skill of using aerial photos, information books and atlases. 

A good place to start to explore this with your child would BBC bitezize. You can watch videos adn learn about each country.

The children will begin to think about what is the same and different about each country. They will think about weather patterns, capital cities, farming and landscapes.

ART

How can we use lines to make patterns? 

The children will be looking at how we use line to make patterns. They will look at works of art by Edward Tinga, Henry Moore and Marianne North.

How can we make colours lighter and darker?

After exploring how we mix the primary colours to change the colour the children will explore how we make the colour lighter and darker.

Computing

The children will continue to explore how we can use technology through the curriculum. eg. maths games, espresso, purple mash, bbc bitesize, phonics play.

 

 

You will find your child's username for purple mash in their reading Record. They will be able to show you at home what skills they are working on.

MATHS

  • ·Number facts  to 20. recalling all facts speedily.
  • Place value- How we can split a 2 digit number in different ways.
  • Addition and subtraction of a 2-digit numbers without bridging the ten.
  • ·money- coin recognition and making amounts.

Help at home telling the time. O’clock, half past, quarter past and quarter to, Recognising coins and making amounts.

 

E-Safety

It is still a high priority of ours to teach the children how to safely access the internet.

Please keep a look out at home what your child is accessing online.

The children will also continue to build on their understanding of e-safety and the importance this has when using the Internet and technology.

Home Learning

Home learning takes place through Seesaw online platform.

ALL LOG IN DETAILS ARE TO BE FOUND IN YOUR CHILD’S READING JOURNAL.

Children will be set maths tasks to complete in order to consolidate learning. They will be set each Thursday.. You will find maths games on here to develop speed in solving calculations too.

 

Helping your child with

reading

Your child’s reading book will be changed every Friday. They will also bring a  lending library book home too. 

Remember to read every day with your child. This could be you reading to them or them reading to you.

Don't forget the importance of reading to your child. Bedtime story time is a wonderful time to share reading.

Reading Challenge

We have had more children receiving book prizes for reading 3 reads at home each week. Remember to keep a note in your child's reading record.

At the end of the week if your child has read at least 3 times they will get a reading sticker.  If they keep this up over the half-term, they will also get a reading prize. Please remember to write in your child's reading record when they have read. 

WORLD BOOK DAY!

World book day is on Thursday 2nd March. We will be reading many stories in class that day.

Go onto the World Book day website where you can find lots of stories for your child to listen to.
